Tandem PV awarded $4 Million grant to accelerate commercial readiness of perovskite solar panels

Earlier this month, TandemPV announced a $4 million grant from the California Energy Commission (CEC) to help accelerate the path to commercialization of its perovskite-silicon tandem solar panels. 

The funding will be used to conduct third-party testing and validation of the company’s panels, considered essential steps to validate the technology before its entry into the market.

New self-assembled monolayer materials strategy for perovskite solar cells yields impressive results

While self-assembled monolayer (SAM) materials show promise for interface engineering in perovskite solar cells, it is quite challenging to achieve an optimal balance between molecular packing density, charge transport efficiency, and defect passivation. To address this issue, researchers from Henan University, Southern University of Science and Technology and City University of Hong Kong have proposed a SAM material design strategy that synergizes flexible head groups with rigid linking groups. 

Using (4-(diphenylamino)phenyl)phosphonic acid as a model molecule, compared to traditional materials such as (4-(9H-carbazol-9-yl)phenyl)phosphonic acid and (4-(diphenylamino)phenethyl)phosphonic acid, the material generated a high-quality perovskite layer. This design achieves superior energy level alignment, improved hole extraction, and enhanced charge transport efficiency, effectively reducing non-radiative recombination.

GCL Optoelectronics raises US$28 million for perovskite PV factory

It was recently reported that GCL Optoelectronics Materials raised nearly CNY 200 million (almost USD$28 million) in a C2 financing round to advance perovskite solar manufacturing and research at its new gigawatt-scale facility in China’s Jiangsu province.

The round was co-led by China Cinda Asset Management and SAIF Partners, following the C1 round that included investors such as Goldstone Investment, Kunshan Gaoxin Group, Sequoia China, and Hanyang Capital. Lighthouse Capital continued to serve as the sole financial advisor.

Auner’s perovskite tandem module achieves 30.46% efficiency

It was reported that Chinese perovskite company Auner achieved a power conversion efficiency of 30.46% with its perovskite/crystalline silicon tandem PV module based on the G12 half-cell format. 

The company says the results have been certified by the Fujian Institute of Metrology. It added that this achievement surpasses its previous record of 29.69%, announced in May this year.

Researchers report first in-line processable p-i-n perovskite solar cell

Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) can achieve high power conversion efficiencies but usually rely on vacuum-deposited metallic contacts, leading to high material costs for noble metals and stability issues for more reactive metals. Carbon-based materials offer a cost-effective and potentially more stable alternative. The vast majority of carbon-electrode PSCs use the negative-intrinsic-positive (n-i-p) or “hole-transport-layer-free” architectures.

Recently, researchers at the University of Oxford, Imperial College London, Philipps-University Marburg, Swansea University and Fraunhofer ISE conducted a systematic study to assess the compatibility of “inverted”, p-i-n configuration PSC contact layers with carbon top electrodes.

WattByWatt inks tested by France's CEA with promising initial results

The French research organization CEA and Canadian start-up WattByWatt are collaborating on the development of processes for manufacturing tandem perovskite-on-silicon photovoltaic cells and have achieved an initial promising result with an efficiency of 28%.

Founded in Montreal in 2020, WattByWatt is a young company specializing in perovskite materials and their implementation. It designs and manufactures single-junction perovskite mini-modules for indoor IoT and IIoT applications such as smoke detectors, locks, cameras, and remote controls. In addition, the company is developing innovative processes for depositing critical perovskite layers for both single-junction perovskite photovoltaic cells and tandem perovskite-silicon solar cells. Its key innovation lies in the ability to deposit the perovskite layer in ambient air using an industrializable wet-process technique. This method uses a proprietary ink formulation developed by WattByWatt.

Macnica to participate in perovskite PV demonstration project in Japan

Japan-based Macnica, a technology solutions company that provides products, services, and solutions focused on semiconductors, cybersecurity, AI, IoT, and autonomous driving, has announced that it has been selected for the Kanagawa Prefecture Next-Generation Solar Cell Promotion Project, an initiative aimed at the early societal implementation of perovskite solar cells (PSCs).

For this project, Macnica will work under the guidance of Professor Chikara Miyasaka of Toin University of Yokohama, the inventor of PSCs, to utilize perovskite modules manufactured by Reiko Co., and will conduct a demonstration project of the perovskite system in the Hakone region of Ashigarashimo County, Kanagawa Prefecture, with the cooperation of the Odakyu Group.

Novel layer-by-layer thermal-evaporation method enables high-performance PeLEDs

Researchers at Nanjing Tech University (NanjingTech) and South China University of Technology have demonstrate a layer-by-layer (LBL) thermal-evaporation strategy to fabricate high-quality perovskite-emitting films with tunable emission wavelengths.

Thermal-evaporated perovskite light-emitting diodes are highly promising for future display and lighting. However, current multi-source co-evaporation methods face challenges such as difficulty in regulating crystallinity, especially for red perovskite light-emitting diodes, whose external quantum efficiencies are still less than 2%.
