Voltec Solar

Established in 2010, Voltec Solar is a France-based producer of photovoltaic panels.

In November 2023, Voltec Solar secured €9.3 million ($10.1 million) from Ademe, France’s environmental agency. The Company plans to use the funds to accelerate the production of perovskite-silicon tandem solar panels.

The French manufacturer currently operates two 250 MW production lines at its factory in Dinsheim-sur-Bruche, France.

The Company explained that each of the lines is compatible with p-type PERC or n-type TOPCon and heterojunction (HJT) technology, but PERC technology was mainly sold until now. It was also said that a new product range will be launching in spring 2024 using TOPCon cells.

Voltec Solar is also developing four-junction (4T) perovskite-silicon technology with the Institut Photovoltaïque d’Île-de-France (IPVF), with the aim of producing 5 GW by 2030.

The facility will make modules based on IPVF's 4T tandem solar cell technology. The two entities plan to set up the first pilot production line by the end of 2023 and the first 200 MW industrial demonstrator in 2025. They will then increase the factory's capacity to 1 GW in 2027 and 5 GW by 2030.

IPVF and Voltec created a joint venture, France PV Industrie, to implement the project. The pilot line will require an investment of €15 million and the industrial demonstrator will require €50 million. The partners estimate the total investment at around €1 billion by 2030.

Golden Solar New Energy Technology Holdings

Golden Solar New Energy Technology Holdings Limited (Originally Baofeng Modern International Holdings Company Limited) is an investment holdings company listed on the Main Board of the Stock Exchange of Hong Kong Limited (Stock Code: 1121).

Earlier on, Golden Solar’s subsidiary, Quanzhou Baofeng Shoes Co., Ltd. engaged in the manufacture and sale of slippers, flip-flops, sandals and casual footwear for Original Equipment Manufacturer customers and design and manufacture of slippers under its own brands of Boree and Baofeng in China.

The Company set out to transform its business model. In addition to completing the acquisition of technological know-how in graphene materials technology, Golden Solar has been selectively hiring scientists and researchers. The company had since then successfully commercialized the graphene materials technology and its application in footwears and air purification devices, and thus re-positioned itself from a traditional manufacturing company to a materials science company.

Mellow Energy / Vein Energy

Mellow Energy, a China-based perovskite solar module manufacturer, was founded in August 2022. It is also sometimes called Vein Energy. The Company was incubated by the New Energy Technology Research Institute of Jinan University and is led by Professor Mai Yaohua, the dean of the institute.

In November 2022, the Company completed an angel round of financing and began constructing a pilot production line in Foshan High-tech Zone. The production line is used to research and develop key technologies to commercialize large-area perovskite solar cells and modules, as well as to manufacture indoor light energy collection and flexible mobile energy products. By February 2023, the perovskite 100 MW module (30cm x 30cm) pilot line was operational. By December 2023, it is said to be producing PCE = 22.9% modules. This is claimed to be certified by a Chinese 3rd party lab.

Aerosolar

Aerosolar is a spin-out from Queen Mary University of London, founded in July 2022, that aims to commercialize a new aerosol-based treatment for making perovskite solar cells more affordable and efficient.

The aerosol-assisted solvent treatment has been developed by professor of Energy Materials and Devices at QMUL Joe Briscoe and his team. It involves passing dimethylformamide solution (alone or with added methylammonium chloride) over a surface in a controlled manner before passing through a reactor containing the heated perovskite sample. This takes no more than five minutes and can also facilitate processing at a lower temperature (100 degrees C) compared to direct thermal annealing.

This approach can significantly enhance the grain growth of perovskite cells, reducing local defects and improving overall uniformity. The treated perovskite cells also exhibit remarkable performance improvements, with increased efficiency and stability across various compositions, device structures, and areas. It also makes these cells more affordable and easier to mass-manufacture.

Looking ahead, Briscoe's team is conducting further tests to assess the long-term effectiveness of this process and its scalability for commercial applications. The plan is to optimize the aerosol-assisted solvent treatment in a large-area reactor, paving the way for the development of cost-effective, lightweight, and flexible solar cells at a commercial scale.
