GCL SI achieves 33.44% efficiency for flexible perovskite-silicon tandem cell

Chinese solar module manufacturer GCL System Integration Technology (GCL SI) has announced a certified power conversion efficiency of 33.44% for its self-developed flexible perovskite-silicon tandem solar cell. The result was verified by the China National Center of Inspection on Solar Photovoltaic Products Quality (CPVT).

Developed jointly with Soochow University, the cell also achieved a device-level power-to-weight ratio exceeding 2,000 W/kg. GCL SI said its research team produced lightweight, bendable cells that resist fracture by overcoming several challenges in ultra-thin silicon substrate integration, interface passivation, and flexible stress control.

According to the company, the technology is well suited to aerospace applications, including satellites, space stations, and deep-space exploration, where the high power-to-weight ratio and mechanical flexibility of the cells are particularly valuable. The team said it is now focusing on improving long-term stability and scaling up large-area manufacturing to move the technology toward commercialization.

The new milestone can be framed alongside a similar recent flexible tandem results, achieved with Soochow University as a recurring partner across more than one program. A separate flexible tandem developed by LONGi Green Energy together with Soochow University reached a certified 33.4% at laboratory cell size - verified by the US National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) - along with 29.8% at wafer size and a power-per-weight of 1.77 W/g.

GCL previously reported 29.51% efficiency for a 2,048 cm² perovskite-silicon tandem module, launched a gigawatt-scale perovskite tandem module facility in Kunshan, and, through GCL SI, helped lead the drafting of testing standards for 3-terminal crystalline silicon-perovskite tandem cells
