Perovskites recognized as core technology in China's emerging industries strategy

At a press conference held by China’s State Council Information Office on January 21, 2026, Vice Minister Zhang Yunming of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) highlighted perovskite materials as one of the key technologies now recognized as being at the international advanced level. This acknowledgment places perovskites alongside other high-impact technologies shaping China’s emerging industrial landscape.

Zhang’s remarks indicate that perovskites are central to China’s strategic technological push under the 14th Five-Year Plan, which aims to modernize traditional industries and accelerate the development of new and future industries. The inclusion of perovskite materials among the nation’s most advanced innovations suggests strong government support for their research, commercialization, and integration into industrial applications - especially relevant given perovskites’ growing importance in next-generation photovoltaics and optoelectronic devices.

Within his speech outlining the “three batches” of industrial achievements:

  • In the first batch, which covers “innovative achievements with high new content,” perovskite materials were mentioned alongside permanent magnet materials and power batteries as examples of technologies reaching global advanced performance standards. This grouping implies that perovskites have moved from laboratory innovation to industrial production, marking a key step toward commercialization.
  • The broader context of China’s innovation strategy emphasizes integrated promotion - from technological breakthroughs to industrialization - supported by policies for suppl-demand matching, collaborative research, and resource sharing. This framework likely benefits perovskite development, as it links basic research directly to practical application and large-scale deployment.

Looking toward the 15th Five-Year Plan, the MIIT plans to further support emerging and future industries through action plans for large-scale application demonstrations of new technologies and pilot zones for innovative industries. This outlook suggests continued national policy and funding support for perovskite advancement, expanding opportunities for demonstration projects and commercialization within China’s broader renewable energy and advanced materials sectors.
