Tokyo Chemical Industry (TCI), a global supplier of laboratory chemicals and specialty materials, is offering TM-DHP, an additive that removes tin(IV) (Sn4+) impurities in tin-based perovskite solar cells.

TCI explains that tin-based perovskites are attractive as low-lead and lead-free alternatives for perovskite solar cells, but they suffer from a key drawback - the Sn2+ in the material readily oxidizes to Sn4+. These Sn4+ impurities act as defects that degrade the quality of the perovskite film and reduce device performance, so removing them is critical for fabricating efficient tin-based PSCs.

As reported by Professor Wakamiya and colleagues in 2020 Nature Communications paper, TM-DHP (2,3,5,6-Tetramethyl-1,4-bis(trimethylsilyl)-1,4-dihydropyrazine) selectively reacts with SnF2 to generate Sn(0) nanoparticles, which effectively scavenge the Sn4+ impurities. Using this in-situ nanoparticle treatment of the precursor solution, Sn4+-free perovskite films can be fabricated, achieving excellent performance - a power conversion efficiency of 11.5% and a VOC of 0.76 V.
Beyond its use in perovskite solar cells, TM-DHP is also highly useful as an organosilicon reducing agent in organic synthesis. TCI offers the material (product D6518), which is manufactured and sold under a license by Enecoat Technologies Co., Ltd.
