Trina Solar secures first commercial order for perovskite-silicon tandem modules

Trina Solar has announced its first commercial order for high-efficiency perovskite/crystalline silicon tandem photovoltaic modules from a global high-end distributed PV customer, marking a major milestone in the commercialization of tandem solar technology. The project, deployed in New Zealand, represents the first time Chinese-developed tandem PV products have entered the global premium residential market.

According to the company, this development reflects the completion of Trina Solar’s full innovation cycle - from laboratory research and standardized product development to large-scale global commercialization. The modules supplied are based on Trina Solar’s 900W+ tandem technology platform and are designed as fully standardized industrial products rather than laboratory prototypes. They meet global residential installation standards and are suitable for batch delivery, representing a transition from experimental devices to commercially viable solutions.

New Zealand, known for its stringent requirements for residential PV systems, serves as a benchmark market for performance, reliability, and lifecycle value. Successfully entering this market demonstrates the competitiveness and maturity of Trina’s tandem modules.

Compared to conventional crystalline silicon modules, the tandem panels offer clear advantages. Their high conversion efficiency can reduce balance-of-system (BOS) costs by approximately 15%-20%, lowering overall system costs. In addition, improved temperature coefficients and low-light performance can increase energy yield by 20%–30% per installation area, maximizing rooftop utilization and economic returns.

According to Edison Zhou, Head of Trina Solar’s Asia Pacific region in Australia, the New Zealand project validates the global applicability and competitiveness of the company’s tandem technology while establishing a scalable model for expansion into other high-end distributed markets.

The commercialization push follows a recent technological breakthrough. In early June 2026, Trina Solar announced that its independently developed 3.1 m² industrial-size perovskite/silicon tandem module achieved a certified peak power of 907W and a conversion efficiency of 29.2%, as verified by TÜV SÜD. This achievement set a new world record for tandem module performance and marked the 41st record set by the company in the PV sector.

A key differentiator of this breakthrough is its readiness for mass production. Unlike many lab-scale advances, the module is based on standard 210 mm silicon wafers and is compatible with existing manufacturing, transport, and installation infrastructure, enabling faster commercialization without major production line modifications.

To address common challenges in large-area perovskite fabrication, such as film uniformity and long-term stability, Trina Solar optimized slit coating and vapor-assisted crystallization processes, improving film consistency. At the same time, advances in interface passivation and spectral matching enabled simultaneous gains in efficiency and durability.

Founded in 1997, Trina Solar has built a comprehensive clean energy ecosystem spanning PV modules, system development, and smart energy solutions. Its activities cover the full value chain, from module manufacturing and power plant development to energy storage, microgrids, and integrated energy systems. With this latest milestone - combining high performance and initial commercial deployment - Trina Solar is positioning itself at the forefront of the next generation of photovoltaic technologies. As demand grows for high-efficiency solutions in premium distributed markets, tandem PV is expected to become a central competitive arena in the solar industry.
