Vision Foundry project to develop vacuum-deposited perovskite microdisplays for AR/VR/XR

SND Display has announced that its “Vision Foundry” project has been selected as a first-phase preliminary research project under the Korean Ministry of SMEs and Startups’ “2026 Deep Tech Challenge Project (DCP) Ecosystem Innovation Model”. The selection will enable the consortium to further define its technological roadmap, commercialization strategy, and ecosystem-building plans as it targets the next-generation display market, with a strong focus on perovskite-based microdisplays.

The Vision Foundry project is led by SND Display, with Professor Lee Taewoo of Seoul National University serving as the consortium head. Participating members include small and medium-sized companies such as Aurum Material, Toprun Material Solution, and Alpha Plus, together with researchers from Seoul National University, Korea University, and KAIST. In addition, Samsung Display is involved in the project, establishing an industry–academia–research collaboration framework around perovskite display technology.

 

The consortium is targeting the microdisplay sector for AR (Augmented Reality), VR (Virtual Reality), and XR (Extended Reality) applications. Current OLED microdisplays suffer from significant optical loss due to their structure, and face serious challenges related to power consumption, heat generation, and limited lifetime at ultra-high resolutions. The industry also remains structurally vulnerable because it relies heavily on overseas suppliers for core light-emitting materials and fundamental patents.

To overcome these limitations, Vision Foundry is bringing perovskite emitters to the forefront as the core next-generation light-emitting material platform. Perovskite offers extremely high color purity compared to existing organic light-emitting materials and allows precise emission wavelength design, making it highly suitable for implementing ultra-fine pixels in microdisplays. The consortium plans to leverage perovskite’s high color purity and high efficiency in ultra-high-resolution microdisplays through a hybrid approach that maintains compatibility with existing display manufacturing infrastructure.

A key differentiator of the project is its decision to develop perovskite as a “vacuum deposition type” material rather than relying on solution processing. According to SND Display, this approach will allow the use of existing OLED vacuum deposition equipment already installed at major display companies. By avoiding the need to build completely new production lines, this strategy is expected to significantly reduce initial capital expenditure and mitigate scale-up risk.

The ultimate goal of Vision Foundry is to realize ultra-high-resolution, full-color perovskite microdisplays and to establish an integrated commercialization platform that connects materials, equipment, and processes through to panel validation. SND Display aims to translate its core fundamental patents into concrete industrial competitiveness and to reshape the industry paradigm by supplying perovskite materials and technologies overseas while generating royalty-based revenue. CEO Lee Taewoo described Vision Foundry as a meaningful project that adds perovskite fundamental material technology and patent strength to Korea’s world-leading panel manufacturing capabilities built during the LCD and OLED eras, with the ambition of securing global leadership in the next-generation display market.
