In September 2017, Toshiba announced the fabrication of a film-based perovskite solar cell mini module with an impressive conversion efficiency of 10.5%. This efficiency rate was achieved in a 5 cm x 5 cm module and is stated by the company to be the highest yet recorded in a multi-cell mini module. In June 2018, New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) and Toshiba announced the world's largest film-based perovskite photovoltaic module. The module is 703cm2 (24.15 x 29.10cm) and achieves a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 11.7%, overcoming the difficulties of increasing size and efficiency at the same time.
Having demonstrated the possibility of increasing area and efficiency of a film-based module, and achieving a conversion efficiency of over 10%, Toshiba will focus on increasing the module size and conversion efficiency, through measures including changing the composition of the perovskite material and by process improvements.
